Far End Rivers - Tierra del Fuego
Group Size:
4 - 6Trip Duration:
7 nights/6 days fishingPeak Season:
December - AprilOverview
For decades fly fishing for the biggest Brown Trout in the world – which takes place in the Tierra del Fuego – was associated with extremely harsh weather conditions. Freezing temperatures, large rivers, deep wading, hostile sights and implacable winds (which require the use of a double-handed rod) have proven to bend even the most tenacious of fishermen.
Far End Rivers belongs to a completely different world, in which the finest techniques, environment and giant trout go together.
The waters of the Irigoyen and Malenguena Rivers run through an ancient wood of Lenga and Nire covering the mountains near the sea. Logs and branches carried by these small rivers on the thaw cycle gather and shape interesting structures along changing geographies. The rivers are sheltered from the wind for the entire extension (except in the pools close to the sea), fostering an entirely unique & exceptional Sea Run Trout fishing experience.
In Far End, single handed rods and good technique prevail….and the fish reaching truly remarkable sizes. During the first season at Far End, fish in the 20-25lb range were consistently landed, along with huge 20lb Robalos in the wells near the river source.
The lodge has a warm and cosy atmosphere where anglers can enjoy top level international cuisine or try the traditional Patagonian lamb dish which is prepared in the typical gaucho way. All dishes are accompanied with perfect wine pairings of the finest Argentinean wines.
Far End has a team of internationally experienced guides – specialising in anadromous species fishing –who are always eager to share their vast knowledge and broad level of experience gained from Iceland and Russia.
Far End Rivers is unquestionably one of the most exclusive offerings for anadromous species fly fishing across the globe. It’s a unique operation in the outermost part of the world.
The Fishing
The rivers hold an abundant population of good sized Sea-run Brown Trout. It's an exclusive fishery on private waters, where fly anglers are able to enjoy single handed fly rods, throughout a unique landscape, without suffering permanently strong austral winds (except at the mouth and in the sea itself), battling wild and fresh sea run fish.
The Sea Run Brown Trout grows at an incredible rate whilst living at sea, migrating annually to the rivers. Strength, suppleness, long runs and incredible jumps make this species a trophy long yearned amongst sportsmen from all over the globe.
This section of private waters in the Tierra del Fuego is very different from other venues in the Rio Grande basin which are known for their strong winds. The area of the Irigoyen and Malenguena Rivers is naturally protected by breathtaking mountains and forest. For this reason anglers can take advantage and use lighter equipment, utilising different techniques to tame the wild and fresh sea run fish which generally enter the river from November until April.
These small rivers will really grab hold of your attention, especially considering the fish average between 8 – 13 lbs and fish of 20-25lb are uncommon. The lodge utilises 6x6 ARGO amphibian vehicles to reach the furthest spots and beats of these wild and remote fishing waters. It is important to realise that all of the fishing is done whilst wading.
