Nyerere National Park, Southern Tanzania
Hidden deep within the wilderness of southern
Tanzania's Nyerere National Park (formerly the
Selous Game Reserve), Lake Nyerere offers
anglers the rare opportunity to fly fish a
completely new and virtually untouched
Tanzanian Tigerfish fishery.
Exceptional numbers of Tanzanian Tigerfish,
surprisingly clear water and an extraordinary
African wilderness setting combine to create
what we believe could become one of the
world's great freshwater fly-fishing destinations.
THE FISHING
Lake Nyerere is home to the Tanzanian Tigerfish (Hydrocynus tanzaniae), one of Africa's most exciting freshwater game fish. Fast, aggressive and armed with a formidable set of teeth, these powerful predators are perfectly suited to fly fishing. Explosive takes, blistering acceleration, spectacular aerial displays and hard, line-stripping runs make every encounter memorable.
Our initial exploration of the lake exceeded even our highest expectations. We landed remarkable numbers of Tigerfish ranging from 6lb to 16.5lb, while regularly seeing and encountering trophy fish in the 20lb class. At times the sheer abundance of fish was difficult to comprehend. We witnessed spectacular feeding frenzies as Tigerfish drove shoals of baitfish to the surface, larger fish attacking smaller members of their own species and even fish repeatedly striking our boat propellers. For a team that has spent more than twenty years exploring remote fisheries around the world, it was an extraordinary experience.
Just as exciting is the clarity of the water. As the Great Ruaha and Rufiji Rivers enter the vast reservoir, their flow slows dramatically, allowing much of the suspended sand and sediment to settle before reaching the main body of the lake. For fly anglers, the implications are enormous. Tigerfish are able to locate and track flies extremely effectively, while the clearer water also creates genuine opportunities to sight-fish actively hunting fish and watch explosive takes unfold in front of you.
The fishery is still very much in its infancy and we expect our techniques to continue evolving as we spend more time on the lake. During our initial exploration, casting large streamers on 9wt outfits with Type 3 through to 300-grain sinking lines while prospecting submerged timber, rocky shelves and structure produced the most consistent results. We also experienced some spectacular surface fishing, with Tigerfish smashing baitfish and surface flies in explosive fashion.
Early mornings and late afternoons are particularly productive, although fishing can remain excellent throughout the day. Guests will fish from purpose-built 18ft aluminium boats powered by 60hp four-stroke outboards, allowing our guides to comfortably explore the lake's enormous variety of water and structure.
THE ACCOMMODATION
The lodge is situated on the northwestern shoreline of Lake Nyerere, just a few kilometres from where the Great Ruaha River enters the lake. Surrounded by pristine wilderness, the camp has been designed to combine the atmosphere of a traditional East African tented safari camp with the comfort expected from a modern fly-fishing lodge.
Guests are accommodated individually in ten spacious safari-style canvas tents constructed on raised timber decks overlooking the lake. Each tent features a king-size bed that can be converted into two singles, an en-suite bathroom with hot-water shower and flush toilet, generous storage and a private deck from which to enjoy the sights and sounds of the surrounding wilderness.
At the heart of camp is a spacious central tent housing the lounge, fully stocked bar and dining area. Overlooking Lake Nyerere, it provides the perfect place to enjoy a cold drink after a day on the water, share stories over dinner or simply watch the sun disappear across one of Africa's great wilderness landscapes.
Lake Nyerere offers considerably more than fishing. The camp lies within the vast wilderness of Nyerere National Park, where elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, zebra, sable and African wild dog still roam. Hippos and crocodiles inhabit the lake margins, while African Fish Eagles are a constant presence overhead. The camp is unfenced, ensuring that the sense of being immersed in genuine African wilderness remains very much part of the experience.
YOUR GUIDES
Lake Nyerere will be guided by FlyCastaway's highly experienced team of professional fly-fishing guides, operating at a ratio of two guests to one guide and boat.
Exploring a completely new fishery requires far more than simply putting anglers onto fish. Our guides will continually develop their understanding of this enormous lake – learning its structure, seasonal movements, productive areas and the techniques required to consistently target its Tigerfish.
This process of discovery is something that has been central to FlyCastaway for more than twenty years. From the remote atolls of the Indian Ocean to Africa's wildest freshwater fisheries, our guides have built their reputations around exploration, attention to detail and an unwavering commitment to giving guests the best possible fishing experience.
For our inaugural season on Lake Nyerere, guests will have the rare opportunity to share in that exploration and experience a fishery at the very beginning of its story.
World-class Tigerfish fly fishing. True African wilderness. A completely new frontier.
